I have been working as a counselor/psychotherapist for the last 20 years. I have been in private practice in Durango and Dolores/Cortez for the past 16 years. My background includes working at two inpatient treatment programs, one for alcohol and drug addiction (Cottonwood) as well as one specifically working with women with eating disorders (Mirasol) both in Tucson, Arizona. I relocated my Dolores office to Cortez
, Colorado in 2008. That office, the Heart Path House, includes several practitioners offering Counseling & Psychotherapy, Hakomi body-centered psychotherapy, massage therapy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, and energetic healing work.
Recently, after 15 years of Buddhist practice I have added another dimension to my counseling practice "Spiritual Mentoring." Through the process of a spiritual mentoring/counseling session, a client can see through layers of emotional injuries and wounds to find a place of clarity and understanding of a bigger picture -- a bigger awareness of the why of any circumstance one might personally face. Spiritual mentoring can provide a reflection back, allowing access to one's higher purpose or an ease in which to be in any circumstance life has to offer -- a way out of the struggle. I recently completed a two year chaplaincy program at Upaya
Zen Center in Sante Fe, New Mexico enhancing my spiritual mentoring
My experience includes working as a psychotherapist with Buffalo Woman Ranch in Dove Creek, Colorado an equine facilitated integrated learning program. I brought my experience as a Hakomi therapist to that arena where we worked with the horses to help in an individual's healing process.
I have continued to work with equine assisted therapy through a local program out of Hesperus, Colorado.
Prior to working as a therapist I worked for many years in the field of education, most recently as Coordinator of Continuing Education at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and before that as Admissions Director and Dean of Students at a massage therapy school, The Desert Institute of Healing Arts in Tucson, Arizona.
My educational background includes a Masters degree in Womens' Studies from San Francisco State University and a Masters degree in Counseling & Psychotherapy from Prescott College. I am a graduate of the Hakomi Body-Centered Psychotherapy Program in Boulder, Colorado and I have completed EMDR training to address issues of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). My eclectic psychotherapy background includes work with Jungian Mandalas, Expressive Art Therapy, 12-step recovery and body image and self esteem issues for women.
Through my work with women with eating disorders both inpatient and outpatient, I created a slide show on body image entitled: "The Body Conspiracy: Advertisings' Influence on Womens Self Esteem" which has been shown at various venues in the four corners area.
My history includes being part of a group who started a Lesbian & Gay Community Center: Wingspan in Tucson, Arizona . I am available to work with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community members on issues related to their sexual orientation as well as general life issues.
